How to Repair and Seal Your Asphalt Driveway
By Helen Stevens
In many cases, even when we think of home repair, we focus on the areas within the home first. Then turn our attention to parts of the house, and forget the many times that the path is an extension of the house. I know from experience that this is often the case. When we bought our house, we spent the first two years of work at home, painting walls, stripping wallpaper, to replace the carpet. During that period, we spent time landscaping, adding trees and shrubs, annuals, planting perennials, and the inclusion. Has been lost in the shift path of asphalt that had been made on the people of our country. After two years of wear and tear, began to show negligence, with small cracks and color. Before long, widened the cracks, and eventually forming a small drill and drilling. We realized the error, which we have been experiencing and are determined to repair our roads and the path we have. The problem is we, were not sure where to start.
As with any project worth doing right, we started to search for information, in part to understand how the asphalt, and to understand what was going on the damage. Here are some of what we discovered:
' what is made of? Asphalt is a black substance formed from a combination of gravel and bits of food left for the distillation of oil. Used waste oil and binder to hold the gravel together. When the mixture is heated and packed together, it is very difficult, the surface is very strong, perfect for the roads and corridors.
' Why is it a good material for use in the portlets? Asphalt is water resistant and flexible enough to withstand the rigorous climatic conditions, would cause a twisting and flying the other materials. It's a formidable force pressure, and allow them to carry the use by heavy vehicles.
' How long should that last? Asphalt has a relatively good longevity when used in the entrances. It has the ability to fifteen and twenty years. Having said this, as is the case with any surface, it can crack and wear down without proper maintenance. Holes can appear as well as, if not dealt with minor problems.
' What causes damage to the asphalt? Weather is the main culprit. When the temperature change, it underlines the asphalt material. In cold weather, and can rain on the trail, causing the leakage of water into the porous surface of the final. When the water melts and freezes, it creates the expansion of these pockets, causing cracks in the model. Cracks allow more water to seep in, and the process of getting worse and worse. If you do not repair the cracks when the weather warms up, and destroying and worsen with each successive year. Also, can the accumulation of oil cars and chemicals used to melt ice and snow during the winter to help break the surface of asphalt more.
' should be fixed when the damage? Once the initial answer is not disclosed. However, if detection occurs during the cold winter months, it is best to wait until the weather warms up. It must remain clear weather, with no rainfall, and temperature must remain above 45 degrees for a period of not less than 24 hours. Asphalt is difficult to work with when it is cold, and you will not get the kind of coherence and quality seal that you are in hot weather. It would be better to wait until late spring to spend the effort. You will get much better results this way.
Focused when we were armed with the knowledge and attention to identify the holes and cracks that have evolved over the entrances to us. Here is what we have done to repair each area:
Repair Cracks
1. Combing the area around the crack to remove organic waste and gravel.
2. Clean any gravel or fragments of organic material of the crack itself. Remember the grass searching for cracks in their growth need to make sure not to leave any part of the plant. Otherwise, it will grow roots and renew herbs or weeds, which helps to eliminate once again to repair.
3. Once in the clean area, used a gun loaded with complex block of high quality asphalt patch to fill the cracks.
4. Using a shovel, press on the asphalt in the compound of the judiciary, making sure that the compound is smooth and free of dust and gravel, and organic waste.
5. Using a paint brush or roller, and apply a good coat of sealer asphalt to repair the crack and the surrounding area. This will create a barrier to water and will help to bond with the surface crack.
Hole Patching
1. Combing the area around the hole to remove the organic waste and gravel.
2. Clean any dirt and rocks and gravel fragments, or organic materials from the crater itself.
3. If there was a piece of asphalt, loose around the edges of the hole, and remove carefully. And must be on the outer edge of the hole be clean, asphalt company, otherwise the patch will not bond properly.
4. If the hole is deep, pack the bottom of the hole with clean, coarse gravel, and stood in the middle of the road when the hole is filled or gravel, at about 3-4 inches from the edge.
5. Add asphalt even at the level of one inch of the edge.
6. Use a shovel or hoe a small jab of asphalt, and remove any air pockets that may have formed in the process of mobilization. This is very important. Will air pockets to provide areas for moisture to collect. When it freezes, the water will expand, and create a bigger problem than it was when you started.
7. Put down asphalt, either with or tampering with a long section of 4x4. This will help to agree on the asphalt, and to ensure that pockets of air is less than that.
8. Fill the remainder of the hole with asphalt until it is half an inch above the edge.
9. Put down the asphalt until it is smooth and even with the rest of the surface. Remember, if you use a 4x4 to tamp, the longer pieces, and it will be heavier. And heavier it is, the pressure of pounding the best you will get.
10,. Spray the patch with a layer of sand. This will prevent things from sticking to the asphalt.
11. If it is available to you, pack the bottom of the asphalt with the roller in the garden. This will ensure that the patch is completely level. If the disc park is not available, the wheel of the car on the region. The weight of the car will pack down asphalt and again, the focus is to remove the air as much as possible.
12. Using a paint brush or roller, apply a layer of asphalt sealer to the entire region, with emphasis on the patch and the surrounding area. Let it set undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours.
13. Once you set the plug, and apply another coat of sealer to the same region, and let it set undisturbed for the same amount of time.
